Lethwei is a traditional Myanmar combat sport fought without gloves. It predates Muay Thai and has been largely unknown outside Southeast Asia until recently. Lethwei World is a media brand building the sport's digital presence for an international audience. The brief was to make the site findable for people who already know what Lethwei is and people who are encountering it for the first time. Both audiences are worth reaching. The search strategies for each are different.
What I built
The scope covers content SEO, structured FAQ development, and schema markup. The schema work produced an A+ AEO score and a passing Google Rich Result Test. Those two benchmarks matter more now than they did two years ago, because AI-generated search results pull from structured data, not just ranked pages. On top of that: the full measurement stack. Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and Search Console all configured and linked so traffic data is interpretable rather than just collected. Results from May to June 2026: organic search traffic grew 3x month over month. Organic became the site's top acquisition channel within that period. The retainer followed.
Search performance: May – July 2026
Weekly data from Google Search Console, covering the full 3-month contract. Totals: 70,451 impressions and 492 clicks over 12 weeks.Impressions started at around 2,600 a week and settled at 8,000–9,000 by late June and through July, a sustained 3x increase that held, not a one-week spike. The biggest single jump came between weeks 4 and 5 (Jun 1–14), when impressions more than doubled. That corresponds with the schema and structured FAQ content going live, which expanded the site's footprint in AI-generated search results.Clicks followed a similar trajectory, growing from 20–31 per week early on to 52–68 per week by July. The ratio held steady, which means more visibility translated into proportional audience growth rather than just passive impressions.Top traffic sources by the end of the contract: Myanmar (201 clicks), Thailand (98), United States (90), United Kingdom (39). The geographic spread confirms Lethwei is building a diaspora audience alongside its home base: two different content jobs running on the same site at the same time. The top performing query by CTR was "mlwc 11" at 30.4%, tied to MLWC 11 fight card coverage, an event-specific search where someone knows exactly what they're looking for and finds it. That piece published after the three-month retainer ended, so the result is downstream of the schema and structure work built during the engagement, not something delivered inside the contract window. The article written while the retainer was active, What Is Lethwei: A Complete Beginner's Guide, covered the other job on the brief: bringing in an audience that had never heard of the sport. The slower-building volume work is in broader terms like "lethwei" and "lethwei training," where the audience is still forming intent.
Why AEO matters here
Answer Engine Optimization is about being cited by AI search responses, not just ranking in traditional results. The two require overlapping but different work: clear structure, direct answers to specific questions, and schema that tells search engines exactly what the content is.A niche sport with a passionate but geographically dispersed audience is a strong candidate for AEO done well. The people searching for Lethwei content are not casual browsers. They want specific answers: rules, fighters, event schedules, history. They want them fast. Getting the structured content right means those searches end on Lethwei World rather than a competitor who happened to publish something adjacent.
