Myanmar Scam Checker

Kaung Ye Marn
Myanmar Scam Checker
Myanmar Scam Checker is a community platform for identifying, documenting, and reporting online scams targeting Myanmar internet users. The internet in Myanmar scaled faster than digital literacy did, which created a window scammers have exploited: romance scams, investment fraud, job scams, fake pages impersonating banks and government services. The platform grew out of wanting to close that gap with something communities could actually use, not a report that sits in a filing cabinet. The content function for this project is different from anything else I work on. The audience includes people who are actively being targeted at the moment they read something. That changes what you optimize for. Speed of comprehension matters more than polish. Trust has to be established in the first sentence, not built over paragraphs. The writing has to be clear enough for someone who has never read about scam tactics before, and credible enough that they forward it to the person they're worried about. I handled the content strategy and writing across the platform: how scam types are described and categorized, how alerts are written, how the community voice is maintained as the platform grows without losing the directness that made people trust it in the first place. Most digital safety communication fails because it writes for the person who already knows what a scam looks like. The people who need the information most are the ones who don't. The content has to meet them before they're skeptical, not after. Getting that right at scale, in a community that grew organically rather than through paid channels, is the part of this project I'm most proud of.
