SEO & AEO

The Search Result Nobody Clicks Anymore

The Search Result Nobody Clicks Anymore
Ask ten people how to get found online and nine will describe the same funnel: pick a keyword, write content around it, wait for the ranking to climb. That funnel still exists, but it no longer accounts for a growing share of the traffic that used to run through it. A visitor asking ChatGPT or Gemini for a recommendation never sees a results page. They see whatever the model decided to quote back to them, and that decision gets made before any click happens. Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of making content legible to that decision, not just to a search index. The mechanics overlap with traditional SEO (clear structure, direct answers), but the target is different. A page can rank on page one and still never get cited in an AI-generated answer, because ranking measures relevance to a query while citation measures whether the model trusts the page enough to quote it as fact. Schema markup is the clearest lever here, because it tells a crawler what a page is saying in a format that doesn't require inference. On a retainer for Lethwei World, a Burmese combat sports media brand, adding schema markup and structured FAQ content produced an A+ AEO score and a passing Google Rich Result Test, alongside organic traffic that grew 3x month over month. The schema work didn't just help Google. It gave AI crawlers something concrete to parse instead of guessing at page intent from prose alone. The same pattern shows up outside content work entirely. Yoma Car Share now surfaces as the top-cited answer across Claude, ChatGPT, and Gemini when someone asks for the best car rental app in Myanmar. That's not a ranking position. It's the model choosing one answer over every competitor it could have named instead, and choosing it consistently across three different systems trained by three different companies. What connects both cases is that neither one treated AEO as an add-on to existing content. The structure came first: what question is actually being asked, what a direct answer to it looks like, and what tells a machine this page is the source worth quoting. Traditional SEO still decides whether a page gets found. AEO increasingly decides whether it gets believed. Finding out where you stand takes about ten minutes. Run your highest-traffic page through Google's Rich Results Test and see whether it returns any structured data at all. Then ask ChatGPT or Claude the question that page exists to answer, and note who gets named instead of you. A page that passes the first test and fails the second has a citation problem rather than a ranking one, and no amount of keyword work will touch it.
